Agricultural & forestry scientists, stop guessing your tax deductions
I see this every year. Brilliant scientists, terrible tax claims. If you’re working in crops, livestock, soils, forestry, climate modelling or remote field research, your deductions must be tightly linked to your current duties. Not what “feels work-related.”
Here’s the controversial part: Most outdoor clothing is NOT deductible. That expensive jacket you wear in the field? Private. Those hiking boots you also wear on weekends? Private. Meals during fieldwork? Private. The ATO does not care that you were “on a farm all day.”
What is deductible?
• Climate modelling, GIS and data software used for research
• Scientific journals and subscriptions
• Field PPE that is safety-rated and used exclusively for work
• Work-related travel to research sites (not home to office)
• Professional memberships
• Work-from-home running costs for analysis and reporting
Audit flags I regularly see
• Claiming ordinary outdoor wear as protective
• No usage diary for software or devices
• Blending private travel with research trips
Scientists are data-driven in the lab. Be just as disciplined with your tax. Guessing is expensive.
